Upon discovering that I would be traveling to Las Vegas for my sister-in-law’s birthday celebration, I had concerns regarding the potential costs of the trip. In preparation, I conducted some research and wrote about how one can experience Las Vegas affordably.

During my time in Las Vegas, I implemented several cost-saving strategies that proved effective, although I did encounter some financial traps. Below is a reflection on what strategies succeeded, what fell short, and what I plan to adjust for my next visit to Las Vegas.

Financial Wins in Las Vegas

Here’s where I maximized my Vegas adventure.

Avoiding Retail Therapy

Las Vegas is renowned for its luxurious shopping venues that appeal to high-stakes gamblers and those looking to splurge. Fortunately, my companions and I indulged in window shopping without making any purchases.

Bypassing Buffets

We found ourselves in line for a breakfast buffet costing $30 per person. Realizing how steep the price was, we made a smart decision to leave and discovered a more budget-friendly diner close by.

Opting for Walking over Taxis

We took advantage of the economical Las Vegas city bus to travel from the strip to Fremont Street and back. Within the strip, we chose to walk everywhere. Comfortable footwear is essential for anyone planning a trip to Vegas, as distances can be long and walking is often unavoidable unless you are willing to pay for transport.

Snacking Smartly

To avoid paying inflated prices for snacks, we stocked our hotel room with affordable drinks and snacks. There was also a CVS nearby with great prices for additional supplies when needed.

Collecting Complimentary Souvenirs

During our visit from the strip to Fremont Street, we snagged a fantastic free souvenir—a photograph at Binion’s Gambling Hall and Hotel next to a $1 million cash display! After taking the picture, we returned an hour later to collect our complimentary printout. Capturing shots at other iconic landmarks on the strip also provided memorable, cost-free keepsakes.

Leaving the Kids Behind

We recognized that some attractions in Las Vegas might not be suitable for children. Thus, we decided to leave our teenagers at home, saving on airfare and meals, and allowing the kids to care for our dogs—eliminating the need for pet boarding expenses.

Discovering Free Attractions on the Strip

Although we attended one pricier show featuring music and acrobatics, which was a quintessential Vegas experience, we also enjoyed numerous entertaining free attractions like the volcano show at the Mirage, the Bellagio fountain light show, relaxing by the hotel pool, and exploring the strip’s various sights day and night.

Exploring Fremont Street

After a stay at a hotel on the strip, we sought a change of scenery. Fremont Street, accessible by a short bus ride, offers a vibrant overhead LED light show, live music, and a variety of street performances. I enjoyed the least expensive meal of the trip here.

Financial Lessons from Las Vegas

Having experienced Las Vegas, I now recognize common money traps and will approach my next visit differently.

Securing Economical Airfare

We paid a premium for our flights since we booked an earlier arrival on Thursday, aiming for an extended first day. A later flight would have been more affordable, and considering Vegas is always bustling, we would have had ample opportunity to explore even with a later arrival. Making Smarter Gambling Choices

With limited time to prepare, I opted for video blackjack, video poker, and a college football bet during my gambling debut, ultimately losing $50 combined. I viewed this as entertainment, but for my next visit, I aim to enhance my skills. I plan to practice or even take blackjack lessons at a casino and engage with dealers at the table to possibly reclaim my losses!

Considering Hotels Off the Strip

For future trips, I would contemplate staying in a Fremont Street hotel instead of on the strip. The casinos off the strip often offer better odds, with lower limit blackjack tables that provide 3:2 payouts as opposed to the less favorable 6:5 typical on the strip. Additionally, hotel accommodations and dining options can be more budget-friendly away from the bustling strip.

Exploring Unique Dining Experiences

Each evening, we found ourselves dining out, which can lead to overspending when you are wandering the strip during the night. It’s tempting to settle for overpriced restaurants nearby due to hunger and distance. Some dining places were simply upscale chains found elsewhere.

Next time, I intend to search for unique, local eateries. One suggestion I received was Battista’s Hole in the Wall, which offers affordable dinner specials that include complimentary house wine. The Ellis Island Cafe is another affordable local spot I plan to check out on my next visit.
